When the Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, travel across the country was forever changed. Instead of taking 6-months by wagon, information, merchandise, and people could travel from coast to coast in 10 days using the railroad. The California State Railroad Museum retells the history of the railroad, and has on display 21 restored locomotives and other railcars, including a Pullman-style sleeping car and a Railway Post Office.

Interesting Facts:

  • The Transcontinental Railroad was completed by two companies: the Central Pacific Railroad (laying track from Sacramento and heading east) and the Union Pacific Railroad (laying track from Omaha, NE and heading west).
  • The two companies were racing to lay the most miles of track
