St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest Catholic church in the United States, seating over 2,500 people. The church is dedicated to the patron saint of the Irish, who constitute a large segment of New York’s population. Even though there are no flying buttresses or extensive stone carvings on the building, it is still considered a Gothic Revival structure.

Interesting Facts:

  • The Great Organ in the Cathedral has over 7,300 pipes.
  • When Archbishop John Hughes revealed his planned site for the church in 1850, protesters felt that it was too far “outside” the city limits. Today, the church lies in the heart of Manhattan and is surrounded by Rockefeller Center.
