From Egyptian artifacts to Roman
sculptures, art spanning more than 5,000 years of world culture
can be found among the Mets 3.3 million piece collection.
Its 32 acres of floor space make it the largest art museum in the
Western Hemisphere, and 5 million people visit the museum every
year. The museums collection includes European Art, American
Art, Art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Ancient Art, Medieval
Art, Asian Art, costumes, tapestries, musical instruments, drawings,
prints, photographs, arms and armor, and sculptures. In addition
to the main museum building, the Metropolitan also owns the Cloisters,
overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattans Fort Tryon
Park. It is devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe.
