This 16-acre
complex serves as home to the N.Y. Philharmonic, the Metropolitan
Opera House, Juilliard School of Music, the Chamber Music
Society, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, the Film
Society, and the School of American Ballet. It consists of
five major theater and concert buildings, a library, a band
shell and two outdoor plazas.
Interesting Facts :
- The land upon which the Lincoln Center
was built used to be a run-down neighborhood that was used
as the set for the film West Side Story.
- The stage in the Metropolitan Opera House
is the size of a football field.
- There was much controversy surrounding
the construction of the Lincoln Center, due to the fact
that 118 buildings were demolished and 1600 residents were
forced to relocate to make room for the new center.
