Annapolis is the state capital of Maryland and at one time was even the temporary capital of the United States. Originally settled in 1649 by Puritan exiles from Virginia, Annapolis was established as a city in 1694 and named after Princess Anne, the future queen (at that time) of England. Annapolis played an important role in both the American Revolution and the Civil War. One of the most popular sites in the city is the Maryland State House, where George Washington resigned in front of the Continental Congress in 1783 and where the Treaty of Paris was ratified in 1784.
The waterfront location of Annapolis makes it a beautiful and idyllic city, complete with a popular harbor, quaint shops, and delicious restaurants. It is also home to the United States Naval Academy.
