John Sutter, an immigrant from Switzerland, built this fort on land that was granted to him by the Mexican Government. It was designed to protect his 50,000 acres of land and provide shelter and protection to weary travelers. In 1847, the Fort provided relief to seven of the members of the Donner Party after their tragic attempt to cross the Sierras on foot.

Interesting Facts:

  • The fort’s walls are 3 feet thick and made of adobe.
  • The first state flag, the Bear Flag, was raised in 1846 by American settlers during a war to separate themselves from Mexico.
