The Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum was built in the one-room school style recognizable from “Little House on the Prairie.” Usually a potbellied stove was located in the center of the room to provide heat, and the teacher’s desk stood on a dais (small platform) in the back of the room.

Interesting Facts:

  • The first school in Sacramento was in 1849, and it closed for the entire month of December due to wet weather and muddy streets.
  • Two examples of instructions given to teachers in 1872:
    1. Teachers will fill lamps, clean chimneys, and trim wicks each day.
    2. After ten hours in the school, the teacher should spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
