“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another…”
These opening words of the Declaration of Independence signaled the birth of our nation. All of the events that had transpired in the New Land pointed to this moment in time, when a young Thomas Jefferson would find himself in Declaration House in Philadelphia attempting to put into words the frustrations and hopes of his fellow colonists.
“We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union…”
The opening words from the U.S. Constitution demonstrate how representatives from 13 individual colonies would gather to set aside their differences, and create a “more perfect Union.” Shortly after the American Revolution was fought and won, representatives from 12 of the 13 colonies would gather in Independence Hall in Philadelphia to create a new government. This government would not only protect the rights of the individual colonies, but would create a strong central government to hold the new nation together.
