Catedral de la Almudena
The idea of the Catedral de la Almudena was born after King Phillip II made Madrid the capital of Spain in 1561. However, it wasn't until 1883 that construction finally started, and continued for 100 years until consecrated by Pope John Paul II. The cathedral is a combination of neo-Gothic and neo-Classical style designed by Marqués de Cubas, Fernando Chueca Goitia, and Carlos Sidro. The Cathedral gets its name from Virgin Almudena, the female patron saint of Madrid.

Fun Facts

  • The cathedral is 341 feet long and 249 feet wide. It deserves a visit if only for its sheer size!

  • The cathedral's ground plan is in the form of a Latin cross.

  • The cathedral's neo-Classical elements were added to be harmonious with its soon-to-be neighbor, the Royal Palace.
