Uffizi
The Uffizi means “office”, which was the initial purpose of the palace. The gallery was home to the Medici offices of the Florentine magistrates in the late 1560’s. The hallways and the walls became littered with the Medici’s collection of sculptures and frescoes, and after the house of the Medici was extinguished, the palace finally opened to the public as one of the first modern museums in 1765. Today the Uffizi is one of the most popular destinations in Europe.
