Trevi Fountain
The 240-year-old Trevi Fountain beautifully captures the characters and stories of Roman water gods, especially Neptune. At 85 feet high and 65 feet wide, it is the largest and grandest of Rome's Baroque fountains. According to legend, it brings luck to throw coins into the fountain, using your right hand and tossing backward over your right shoulder. But be careful what you wish for! Throwing one coin supposedly means you will return to Rome; throwing two coins ensures that you will fall in love with a beautiful Roman; and three tossed coins means you will marry that lucky lady or gentleman!

Fun Facts

  • In 19 BC, with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians were able to find a pure source of water that would flow into the fountain.

  • A design competition was held in which Nicola Salvi initially lost to Alessandeo Galilei from Florence. There was such a commotion about a Florentine working on the project, that the commission was given the Salvi anyway.
