Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps are a famous location in Rome, a steep connector between the Piazza di Spagna and the Trinità dei Monti church above. The stairway's design took the concept of terrace garden stairs to an extreme. Usually full of potted plants and flowers, the steps are a place to eat, rest, or socialize for locals and tourists alike at all hours of the day!

Located at the base of the steps is the home of English poet, John Keats. It is now the Keats-Shelley Memorial House and Museum. Visitors to the museum are rewarded with an impressive display of English Romanticism - 9,000 books, letters, and related works of Keats, Shelley, Byron, and their contemporaries.

Fun Facts

  • The epic stairway of 138 steps was built with French diplomat Stefano Gueffier's funds between 1723-1725.

  • In the 18th century, the most beautiful men and women of Italy would stand on the steps and wait to be chosen as an artist's model.
