Quirinal Square
Piazza del Quirinale is dominated by the Palazzo (palace) del Quirinale. Built in 1573 by Pope Gregory XIII, it has served as both the papal summer home and the royal residence of the Italian monarchy. Since 1948, it has housed the offices and residence of the President of the Italian Republic.

Fun Facts

  • There are only 30 authentic obelisks standing in the world. Rome has 13 of them, including the one in Quirinal Square.

  • The Quirinale Hill used to be called Montecavallo (Horse Hill) due to the presence of the large marble statues of the Dioscuri twins (the great horseman Castor and the boxer Pollux) and their horses.
