Gallerie dell’Accademia
Immerse yourself in world-famous masterpieces at the Galleria dell’Academia. Created in 1784, it has truly lived up to its original purpose as a place of study for art students, and helped to transform Florence into one of the art capitals of the world. Within the gallery there is a conservatory of music and the extraordinary school of art restoration. It houses some of the world’s most famous art pieces, such as the original David by Michelangelo.

Fun Facts

  • It was the first academy of drawing in Europe

  • The David was moved the gallery in 1873, due to “atmospheric pollutants” (people would throw stones and try to take chunks of marble from the statue).

  • The Gallery is famous for a few more works from Michelangelo such as, the Prisoners and the St. Matthew.
