Catacombs
The Catacombs are ancient Jewish and Christian underground cemetaries. People would gather in the Catacombs to celebrate their burial rites, the anniversaries of martyrs, and their deaths. Plus, they were running out of open-air ground space, and- it was cheaper! Roman law forbade the burial of the dead within the city walls, so all catacombs are located outside the city along the great consular roads such as the Appian Way.

Fun Facts

• Some catacombs have been in use as late as the 1920's.


• The catacombs lie 22-65 feet below the surface in area of more than 600 acres.
