Place de la Concorde
At the eastern end of the Champs Elysées is the Place de la Concorde, one of Europe's most magnificent and historic squares. A major feature of the square is the 3,300-year-old Luxor Obelisk that celebrates the reign of Ramses II, given to France in 1829 by the viceroy of Egypt.

Fun Facts

  • The square's obelisk is one of three of "Cleopatra's Needles," the other two obelisks reside in New York and London.
  • In the span of one month in the 18th century, deaths by guillotine in the Place de la Concorde took the lives of 1,000 people including King Louis XVI and Marie Antionette.
