Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
The Globe Theatre has been faithfully reproduced from Shakespeare’s original open-air Elizabethan playhouse - almost an exact replica. Performances are true to original form, being held in natural light, open to natural elements, with no sound system. Plays are also performed with cross-dressing actors, and heckling from the audience is welcomed.
Fun Facts
- “Groundlings” were the people who couldn’t afford to buy a regular theater ticket. For a penny (sometimes a whole days wage) they could find a spot on the ground directly in front of the stage to stand during the play. Some people argue that the groundlings had the best seats.
- A traditional Globe Theatre production has no background scenery.
- It is said that Shakespeare himself appeared as an actor on stage at the Globe.
