Hyde Park
Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in London, and has remained a royal park since 1536 when it was seized by Henry VIII. Historically, it was used by monarch’s for hunting, dueling, and horseracing. Today, Hyde Park is one of London’s most prized public spaces and is used for political demonstration, music performances, and exhibitions. The park is well known for its Speakers’ Corner, where public speaking is allowed as long as the monitoring policemen conclude that no laws are being breached.
Fun Facts
- Free speech is prohibited by authorities and explicitly enforced by law in all Royal Parks in London, including the rest of Hyde Park outside of Speakers’ Corner.
- Speakers such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lennon, and George Orwell have held demonstrations in Hyde Park.
- Australia, Canada, The Netherlands, Singapore, and Trinidad and Tobago all have their own parks that are designated for free speech.
