Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court Palace was a favorite residence of royalty from Henry VIII to George II.  Constructed in the early 16th-century under the direction of Thomas Wolsey, Hampton Court was designed using Italian architectural elements and was created to be a Cardinal’s palace.  Henry VIII took over the palace in 1525.  The Palace’s magnificent gardens were largely inspired by William and Mary, who commissioned Christopher Wren to design what is now the grounds for the famous annual Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

Fun Facts

  • It is said that you are never alone in Hampton Court Palace.  The ghosts of Queen Jane Seymour and Queen Catherine Howard still walk the hallways and the stairwells.
  • Hampton Court is the site of the world-famous Hampton Court Palace Hedge Maze.  This elaborate maze can have you wandering for a third of an acre on half a mile of paths.
  • The Great Vine, large grape vines planted in 1768, still bears large bunches of grapes to this day.
