Dove Cottage
Dove Cottage is best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a major English romantic poet who helped introduce the Romantic Age in English literature.  From December 1799 to May 1808 during the production of some of his finest works, Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy spent there time at the cottage, “plain living, but high thinking.” The cottage is on the edge of Grasmere in the Lake District and welcomes some 70,000 visitors every year. 

Fun Facts

  • The rent may be a little higher today, but in 1799 Wordsworth paid ₤5 a year.
  • When Williams’ daughter, Dora, died, he and the rest of the family went to a nearby field and planted hundreds of daffodils in her remembrance.  It is owned today by the National Trust.
  • Some of William Wordsworth's most famous works are Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems,  and Poems, in Two Volumes, with the peoms “I wandered lonely as a cloud” and “The world is too much with us.”
