The British Museum
The British Museum is the oldest public museum in the world. It was established in 1753 with the collections of physician Sir Hans Sloan and was opened to the public in 1759. The museum has braved the storms of war and enjoyed the generosities of donated and bequeathed collections. Its collection has now evolved into 13 million objects from all continents and is one of the most prestigious history and culture museums in the world.
Fun Facts
- If you devoted just 60 seconds to each object, you’d be there, without sleep or meal breaks, for more than 12 years.
- The British Museum is also a national library. King George II donated the Old Royal Library and with it, the right to every copy of every book published so that the library’s growth is indefinite.
- In 1802, King George III presented the Rosetta Stone, the key to the decipherment of hieroglyphics to the museum.
